📝 Why I Took an 8:05 PM Sales Call & How Storytelling Transformed Our Business

Last week, I took an 8:05 PM phone call with a prospect.

Crazy? Maybe.

It certainly goes against everything any business coach would recommend.

So, why did I take a sales call at 8:05 PM at night?

Because it was a small, 1-man operation that was really struggling with their marketing & needed to get it sorted ASAP.

But when I jumped on the call, I was surprised to hear that this organization was making the same simple mistake I made when I first opened for business in 2007…

The Common Mistake in Marketing

Back in 2007, I opened up for business & began shouting from the rooftops about our services:

🗣️ “We create promo videos”
🗣️ “We produce training videos”
🗣️ “We make video social media clips”

But no matter how much I shouted… I got crickets.

The odd few clients would come & keep me afloat, but truthfully, things weren’t great.

Then in 2014, after 7 long years, I met a man with a beard.

Okay fine, I already knew the man with the beard…

But it was in 2014 that I sat down with my good friend (& future business partner) Matt & re-thought our marketing strategy.

This was where we really started niching & tailoring our offerings, focusing on video production for non profit organizations & video marketing strategies that would resonate with our target audience.

But during that conversation, we realized we were missing one key thing—our story.

The Power of Storytelling in Non-Profit Marketing

Over the next few years, clients came thick & fast. We were working with:

  • Major non-profits
  • 8-figure agencies
  • 9-figure companies

And getting asked to speak at multiple events every month.

All because we started marketing through story.

But why does using story in your marketing work?

Well, this blog is a prime example 🤷🏾‍♂️

Over the last 60-90 seconds, you’ve been whisked away by the story of our journey.

Did you notice how smooth it was to read?
Or how you didn’t feel sold to the whole time?

That’s the power of storytelling.

It hooks people in, keeps them engaged, pulls on their heartstrings, then pushes them to take action.

All without feeling pushy.

Why Storytelling Matters for Non-Profits

There’s a reason we are all glued to movies, books, & TV shows—they’re all stories.

Now, just imagine if people were glued like that to your non profit marketing. What would that do to your top-line revenue?

Whether you’re focusing on donor engagement, non profit fundraising, or leveraging client testimonials to showcase your impact, storytelling is the glue that holds it all together.

At B&B, our video production agency specializes in not for profit video production that tells your story in a way that connects with your audience and drives results.

Our experience in nonprofit video production has shown us that stories are what make people care. A well-crafted, story-based video can boost engagement, increase donations, & get the buy-in you need from stakeholders by ensuring your message reaches the right people in the most impactful way.
